3D Printing With Metal Filaments

INTRODUCTION


Some of the most difficult filaments to 3D Print with your 3D Printer is Metal Filament. We will be talking about FDM or Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing when regarding metal filament. This makes 3D Printing TPE Filament easy to 3D print. Very few people are able to 3D Print in metal because of its abrasiveness to the nozzle of the 3D Printer. If you can get you hands on metal filament you will notice that you can 3D print Copper, Iron, Brass and Bronze. Alongside with being very brittle the more metal to plastic ratio the manufacture adds to it.


METAL FILAMENT


Now there are some things you need to know about 3D printing Metal Filament. Because of the composition of this type of 3D printing filament you need to place the roll of filament above the extruder. This is required due to the extreme brittleness of the 3d printer filament itself. You can expect to 3D print this material in layers of 0.1mm or 100 microns.

Some of the materials you 3D print in metal are:


  • Aluminum

  • Copper

  • Stainless Steel

  • Titanium


Varying on the manufacturer the mix from plastic to metal changes. The manufacturer I linked in the bottom of the blog has a mixture of 60% metal and 40 % PLA. With all these 3D printing metal filaments you can put them in a kiln after 3D printing. After you bake them in kiln you will have melted the plastic and have your 3D prints in 100% metal. Now this is all according this manufacturer. We have yet to test this statement.

  • 3D Printer Head Speed: 30mm/sec

  • Extruder Temperature: 205-235°C

  • Bed Temperature: 40-50°C


Equipment: You need to attach a hardened nozzle on your 3D printer extruder head because this 3D Printing Material is very abrasive to the nozzle. If you do not do this your brass extruder will eventually break apart and cause a clog.
